After having to cancel most of their planned events this year, artists from the Fine Arts Group were very excited to be able to hold a Watercolour Workshop in September with an external tutor.
Szczepan Urbnowicz is an architect, an architectural illustrator and watercolour artist. He was a very good teacher, taking us in steps through 2 demo paintings...we watched each step then worked from the photos he supplied.
First we learned how to paint ripples in water, and how to mix greys from three shades of blue.
For the boats painting we began with a wet wash, leaving the boats area white and adding sienna instead of blue where the sunlight hits the water.
Next we added the darker ripples in the water.
After mixing a light grey with the cobalt blue, we painted in the pencilled boats as a silhouette shape.
Then we mixed the darker greys using the same sienna and alazerine with the darker blues.....and used them to add darker details on the boats, keeping them simple, finally adding masts and wriggly dark lines in the water.
Our second painting was a landscape in which we learned how to make effective clouds and how to make mountains fade into the distance.
Sczcepan managed very well to teach a class to a mix of watercolour artists and others who normally work in acrylic or other mediums. His tips were invaluable and we all learned techniques we can go on to practice in the future. Many thanls also go to
our fellow artist Jean who provided us with a delicious morning tea.
